Beach Bound

This project started out as an exercise in using re-purposed materials, such as old beach towels, to create a soft good object for one of my passions.  Going to local beaches has always been one of my favorite leisurely activities.  The standout features of the backpack are a shade to protect your face from the sun and a built-in and removable pillow for comfort as you lay on the sand.

The project continues to evolve into a more marketable and production ready object.  The newest version features a hood instead of a pull out shade so that this bag can be used for Summer and Winter.

Soft Goods

Fractured

This piece was inspired by both the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo main character and the wild hats worn by guests at the Prince William and Kate Middleton's recent wedding.  Initially this started out as an avant garde headpiece.  Through exploration sketches I became more drawn to the the tough yet broken character of Lisbeth Salander.  This laser cut crop top is meant exhibit both biker chic and the fractured and exposed fragility of shattered glass.

Leather Leaves

Experimenting with and transforming materials is one of the most exciting ways we can grow as designers.  Since we do not get to experience much variation in seasons in Southern California I decided to bring the seasons to me by making a leather leaf curtain. If the curtain were made out of real leaves they would deteriorate and not stand the test of time. Using vegetable tan leather, a laser cutter, boiling hot water and some leather dyes I was able to create something that looks just like the real thing that will also last forever.

A Day in the Life

This glove and the accompanying album sleeve were inspired by The Beatles song "A Day in the Life" and the duality of real life and 'dreams'.  When the mitten is covering the fingers the glove is muted and cozy.  When the mitten is open there is an unexpected jumble of colors.  The same narrative is used in the album sleeve.

Re-purposed Sandal

Sometimes you have to make something out of nothing.  This sandal was made entirely of re-purposed materials such as yard, key rings, sheet dividers, and foam craft stickers.  And because I'm a Southern California girl these sandals were of course made for showing off your feet at the beach.

Caution

Every girl loves a clutch, but if you live in a big city you're always concerned about your purse getting snatched, or worse yet getting attacked.  This versatile fold-over clutch features a strap for your hand to slide through making it more difficult to get stolen.  Hidden in between the layers of the purse is a high pitched alarm that will scare off attackers or alert others around you that you need help.  The alarm is activated by a firm tug on the wrist strap.  Be stylish, be safe.
